Sandy Troudt
Art from Northern Canada

Sandy Troudt - Biography

Sandy immersed herself in art during and after a satisfying career of teaching and school administration. She studied with many notable artists and mentors whose expertise helped her find her own path and she strives to help others discover their unique way through their own art journeys.

The natural beauty of her surroundings inspires Sandy’s work. She is fascinated by the contrast between forested and cultivated land at the edge of the wilderness. Vibrant, wide-open landscapes capture her attention as well as the small, intimate details that blaze brightly in hidden places.  Trees frequently become the main ‘characters’ in her landscapes as they draw her eye to the spirit and beauty found in untamed settings.

Experiments with technique and medium continually refresh her eagerness to learn and sustain her delight in creating vivid images.  Sandy often paints on a black-toned canvas.  “From the first stroke of my brush, this approach provides maximum contrast for values, highlights, shapes, edges and colour”.

Layers of transparent paint and translucent glazes and veils as well as a variety of textural effects, are used to create some of her images. “Transparent layers of paint draw the viewer into the painting and the textures create an enticing tactile quality.”

Printmaking is also an important part of Sandy's studio practice. The constant exchange of ideas and visual vocabulary between painting and printmaking has a wonderful synergy; the two media continually enhance the elements of each process. The subjects of some of her prints are recognizable but other works are abstract and organic. The unifying elements of her work are bold colour, shape, placement, balance, texture and negative space. Unbound, she likes to take her work in multiple directions and continues the dance between painting and printmaking as curiosity and invention lead her to undertake new challenges.

Sandy's art enriches her life continuously, sustaining interest and motivation as it offers delight.  Membership in artist’s groups have fostered deep friendships.  Sandy Troudt is an active member of the FCA, founding member and past president of its Peace River Chapter.  She is a signature member and past president of Flying Colours Artists' Association in the Peace Region.  Her award winning work is represented in the 2014 publication, ARTISTS OF B.C. – Volume 4 and her work is featured in the October edition of Southwest Art Magazine, 2016 as part of an Art in Canada focus and in the May and August editions, 2017.  One of her landscapes has been chosen for representation in the SW Art Magazine's International Landscapes feature in February, 2018.

Sandy's work may currently be viewed at Peace Gallery North in Fort St. John, BC, the Grant Berg Gallery in Grande Prairie, and Kananaskis, AB, the Dawson Creek, BC Art Gallery, and the Federation Gallery on Grandville Island in Vancouver, BC in selected exhibitions or online at sandytroudt.com, prfca.com (Peace River Chapter of the Federation of Canadian Artists),  flying colours. com and the Print Artists North web sites.
